Prospect Silicon Valley and fka SV unveil the region’s first open-access driving simulator
On Monday, Nov. 16, Prospect Silicon Valley and fka SV unveiled the region’s first open-access Driving Simulator and Vehicle Systems Lab or SimLab. SimLab is a unique partnership of ProspectSV and fka SV, led by Dr. Markus Bröckerhoff, which closely cooperates with RWTH Aachen University, Germany. At a grand opening event attended by more than 80 guests from the automotive manufacturing, supplier and startup industries, fka SV’s team of researchers presented use cases for SimLab to Silicon Valley companies and offered test drives in the new facility. Typically found only in corporate R&D labs or at research institutions, the ProspectSV and fka SV SimLab offers startups, OEMs and suppliers the ability to access a research-grade simulator facility and expertise to develop, test and prove new vehicle technologies.
The fka SV SimLab is an NHTSA guidelines compliant driving simulator. With a real car and 220-degree multi-screen surround view, the simulator creates an immersive virtual environment for the driver. The fka SV SimLab offers a multitude of services from driving simulator time up to full experiments for start-ups, OEMs, automotive suppliers, as well as companies with developments for automotive application.
“This driving simulator forms an important cornerstone in our internationalization strategy, forming an access point to our portfolio of automotive competence and R&D facilities, supporting the design of revolutionary concepts for future mobility” said Lutz Eckstein, Chair of the Institute for Automotive Engineering at Aachen University and Chairman of the board of fka SV. In Aachen, more than 150 highly skilled engineers systematically use simulation tools combined with workshops and test benches for chassis, body, drive train and batteries to create innovative systems and vehicle prototypes from scratch. “Driving simulators will play a decisive role in defining connected and automated driving. They facilitate the definition of trusted trajectories and convincing HMI-concepts for automated driving, creating a new driving experience.”
“We believe this will be a facility and a partnership that will produce game changing innovations for the automotive technology field,” said Doug Davenport, Executive Director of ProspectSV. “There is a host of innovators rushing into this space – technology going into future cars will help avoid collisions, self-manage congestion and even enable better access to mobility across the board. These are global challenges that warrant serious attention; Silicon Valley innovators are in a position to change the face of automotive tech, and build new companies as a result.”
The fka SV driving simulator is one of several simulators operated by fka including a brand new high fidelity driving simulator of fka’s cooperation partner ika, which is the only simulator of its kind worldwide with open access for companies as well as other organizations.
